Tardy, a graduate of Xavier Prep High School, sang with the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony at the young age of 17 and later became one of the first African Americans to sing with the New Orleans Opera company in 1972.
Upon moving to Indianapolis in 1977 and Milwaukee in 1978, she took up acting and singing jazz. She composed original material for and recorded two jazz albums: Sorceress with TM Records in 1981, and Think of This on her own production label, Samajoi Records, in 1986. Tardy also has held numerous positions as a music educator and reading specialist.

Tardy earned her BS in vocal music education from Xavier University of New Orleans in 1961. She then earned an MA in Reading Specialization from Cardinal Stritch College of Milwaukee in 1986, writing her thesis on “The Importance of Music Instruction to Reading Achievement.” She later earned an MBA from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1995.

Now “retired,” this former educator and administrator keeps herself busy by traveling the country to do book readings of her book as well as presentations and workshops on a variety of topics. She also still enjoys composing and recording music. Joanne Tardy Site
